Ward 5 Newsletter - August 2024

Writer: Stacey BrownStacey Brown

Items of Note for Monday’s, August 12th City Council Meeting:

Consent agenda:

  1. Golf Course Advisory Committee recommends nonresidents and residents pay the same member rate that is still hundreds of dollars less than other golf courses.

  2. Steeplegate Mall developers request the City spend $6,250 for a consultant to determine what infrastructure improvements the City should fund in support of their project.

Public Hearing to amend the ordinance on Conditional Use Permits for obstructing the State House Dome and height limits in Central Business and Opportunity Corridor Performance Districts. Request was previously denied by Zoning Board and opposed by abutters.

2nd Annual Sunflower Festival, August 10 - 18th, 4 Loudon Road

Three years ago, I imagined community gardens in the fields along the river across from downtown. I learned the farmers' lease was ending, lobbied to create a committee to look at new uses, and served on the Conservation Commission committee that selected Sunfox Farms. Not only does Sunfox Farms exceed the City's conservation goals with their organic farming practices, their festival brings beauty and tourism to our downtown in a celebration of sustainability. Must see! Festival hours: 10-6 weekdays, 10-7 weekends.

How I am working on sustainability, livability, and equity:

  • Examining Concord streets and sidewalks as part of the Complete Streets working group to update the Transportation Chapter of our Master Plan. Check out my new weekly blog that specifically looks at accessibility and connectivity via sidewalks: Where the Sidewalk Ends, available here.

  • Working with residents, School District, City staff and fellow Councilors to verify information about the Middle School Project and identify infrastructure costs to taxpayers.

  • Continuing to connect residents working with underserved Concord populations with municipal resources.

Highlights for committees that I serve:

  • Energy and Environment Advisory Committee is gearing up for robust outreach and education around Community Power. I hosted a table at National Night Out with fellow committee members, former Ward 5 Councilor, Rob Werner, and Ward 10 Councilor, Jeff Foote, to talk about Community Power and energy conservation of trees. We'll be at the Multicultural Festival at Keach Park next month. Stop by!

  • Parking Committee - Approving a photographic exhibit and LED lights in Storrs Street Garage stair tower for the October Sound & Color Festival and discussing public access of the future Legislative Parking Garage.

  • Tree Subcommittee - former Landscape Architect, Bob Pollock, and I will be leading the Downtown Tree Tour during September's First Friday. Join us!

THANK YOU, LIFEGUARDS!

For the first time in many years, there are enough lifeguards to keep our pools and splash pad open for the season.

Please thank lifeguards for their service to our community when you see them!

Scenes from Ward 5: Concord-Sunapee Rail Trailhead at 25 Fisherville Rd

The Concord-Lake Sunapee Rail Trail's (clsrt.org) is building a 34-mile trail along the old railroad grade from Horseshoe Pond in Concord to the shore of Lake Sunapee. At the trailhead, there is parking for seven vehicles, a bicycle fix station with pump, and a kiosk with trail information. Thanks in part to the Concord-Lake Sunapee Rail Trail, Concord School District kindergarteners and 1st graders are learning how to ride bikes in PE class.

Books I am reading: The Belly of the Atlantic by Fatou Diome. Available via the Interlibrary Loan program through the Concord Public Library.

Run Towards the Danger by Sarah Polley. Available at the Concord Public Library.
