Ward 5 Newsletter - June 2024

Writer: Stacey BrownStacey Brown

Items of Note for Monday’s, June 10th City Council Meeting:

1.       Property inspections are scheduled to begin July 1st for the Full Measure and List Revaluation of properties, which hasn’t been done for 34 years. A webpage will go live on the City’s website and continuously update the field inspection by neighborhood and street name. concordnh.gov

2.       Request to move a bus stop on Main Street per Public Safety Advisory Board. I have opposed this twice before on the Transportation Policy Advisory Committee because data shows it is in the best possible location.

3.       Public Hearing on non-ordinance based Parks and Recreation fees, rates will be effective July 1, 2024. I will be recommending an increase on non-resident fees.

How I am working on sustainability, livability, and equity:

  • Supporting the pilot community garden on Warren Street and connecting gardeners with resources.

  • Examining Concord streets and sidewalks as part of the Complete Streets working group to update the Transportation Chapter of our Master Plan.

  • Working with residents, School District, City staff, education and construction professionals to understand the financial, environmental, and accessibility losses of building a middle school and fields at Broken Ground.

Finance Committee Highlights:

  • City Council approved the FY2025 Budget, which will result in a 3.5% tax increase for the City portion = $118 increase (City portion) for homes valued at $350K.

  • $150K approved from the Economic Development fund for future events. Mayor Champlin ensures a transparent process for application and disbursement.

  • 7.75% increase in Water rate increase and 8% increase in Wastewater rate increase to fund multiple Water and Wastewater Capital Improvement Projects.

LIFEGUARD COMMUNITY PERKS!

  • The YMCA is providing a free gym membership to all those who commit to serving as Concord lifeguards. The free membership expires when the City pools open in late-June.

  • Everyone who completes lifeguard training will receive one general elective credit at NHTI.

Please help spread the word that we are hiring lifeguards $16/hr to start.

Let’s Connect! I’ll be at these:

  • June 13th, 1pm, Merrimack River Greenway Trail Phase 2 Groundbreaking Ceremony, 4 Loudon Rd

  • June 20th, 10am, World Refugee Day, Heights Community Center, 14 Canterbury Rd

Scenes from Ward 5: Garrison Park, 31 Hutchins Street

Garrison Park was part of Concord’s oldest park dating back to 1881. A master plan for the park conducted in 2009 included additional parking, picnic tables, benches and trails. Currently, the park is 11.5 acres with two basketball courts, 13 parking spaces, a playground, and a zero-entry pool with restrooms and changing area - it’s ready for you! Both the pool and the basketball courts enjoy welcome shade in the afternoons.

Books I’m reading/listening:

Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg. Book and audiobook available at the Concord Public Library.

Mindful of Race by Ruth King. Audiobook available through the Concord Public Library.
